Understanding Tenancy & Housing Issues
Tenancy and housing problems can arise in many situations; when a tenant receives an eviction notice, faces unsafe or unlawful housing conditions, struggles with rent arrears, or encounters discrimination or harassment from a landlord or agent. These issues may also include disputes about damages, repairs, bond refunds, or public housing eligibility.
Australian tenancy legislation provides strong protections for renters through state and territory residential tenancy laws, including the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 (NSW), the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (Victoria), and the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 (Queensland).
Tenants have rights to safe, habitable housing, fair treatment, privacy, and proper notice before eviction. Public housing tenants also have rights to maintenance, fair allocation, and review of decisions affecting their tenancy.
